Thanks Ben. This article was certainly just the tip of the iceberg, and how the consumer is directly influencing innovation, design, and manufacturing more and more. It would be interesting to further dive into the analytics on the role and effects of new forms of marketing (social media, guerilla, in-game, etc) towards the automotive industry. And of course, with the shift towards more options and customizations for your car, this causes a need for the current manufacturing and supply-chain processes to change as well.

We are no longer dealing with your grandfather's (or even your father's) era of car-buying and marketing.

Great piece. This begs a follow-up question about the long term role of the customer/the public in innovation and development of the product itself. Social media is nice, but the OEM of the next decade is going to be challenged not merely to make people feel better about their cars (BMW or Acura's high touch customer service, or the Saturn "donut" strategy, for example) but to genuinely make them a stakeholder in the production process. How could you resist loving a car you voted for?

Financially shaky manufacturers looking for their next "hit" from the Gen Y audience would do well to explore that.
